7 Signs Your Boiler Needs Repairing Before It Breaks Down
Most boiler breakdowns don't happen out of nowhere - there are usually warning signs in the weeks beforehand. Here's what to watch for.
1. Strange noises
Banging, whistling or gurgling sounds (sometimes called "kettling") often point to limescale build-up or trapped air, and tend to get worse over time if left unaddressed.
2. Yellow instead of blue flame
A healthy gas flame should burn blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide risk, and should be checked urgently.
3. Frequent pressure drops
If you're regularly topping up the pressure via the filling loop, there's likely a small leak somewhere in the system that's worth investigating before it becomes a bigger problem.
4. Radiators heating unevenly
Cold spots, especially at the top or bottom of a radiator, usually point to trapped air or a sludge build-up affecting circulation.
5. Rising energy bills
A boiler working harder than it should to heat your home shows up as a gradual increase in your energy bills, even without any change in usage.
6. Boiler switching itself off
Modern boilers have safety features that shut them down when something isn't right. Repeated shutdowns are the system telling you it needs attention.
7. It's over 10-12 years old and has never been serviced
Age alone isn't a fault, but an older boiler that's missed annual services is far more likely to fail without warning.
If any of these sound familiar, book a boiler service or boiler repair before a small issue becomes a cold house and an expensive breakdown.
