Power Flushing Explained: Does Your Heating System Need One?
A power flush is one of those terms plumbers use often but rarely explain properly. Here's what it actually involves.
What a power flush does
A power flush forces water at high velocity (and often with a cleaning chemical) through your entire central heating system - boiler, pipework, and every radiator - to break up and remove built-up sludge, rust, and debris that accumulates over years of use.
Signs your system might need one
- ✓ Radiators that are cold at the bottom but warm at the top
- ✓ Some radiators barely heating up at all compared to others
- ✓ Discoloured, murky water when you bleed a radiator
- ✓ A noisy boiler, or one that seems to be working harder than it used to
- ✓ A system that's never been flushed and is more than a few years old
What to expect
A power flush typically takes the best part of a day for an average house, and is usually done as part of a boiler replacement or when tackling persistent heating performance issues. Afterwards, radiators should heat evenly and the system generally runs more efficiently and quietly.
