What to Do If You Smell Gas in Your Swindon Home
A smell of gas is never something to ignore or wait out - here's exactly what to do, in the right order.
1. Don't create a spark
Don't turn light switches on or off, don't use a doorbell, don't light a match or use your phone inside the property. Any spark near a gas leak is a serious risk.
2. Turn off the gas supply
If you can safely reach it, turn off your gas at the meter (the lever should be turned so it's at a right angle to the pipe).
3. Open windows and doors
Ventilate the property as much as possible to let the gas disperse.
4. Get everyone outside
Leave the property, taking pets with you if it's safe and quick to do so.
5. Call the National Gas Emergency Number
Call 0800 111 999 immediately - this is free, available 24/7, and is the correct first call for a suspected gas leak, not a general plumber.
After the emergency is dealt with
Once the National Gas Emergency team has made the situation safe, you'll usually need a Gas Safe registered engineer to identify and repair the underlying fault, such as a failed appliance or damaged pipework, before gas can be safely reconnected.
