Why Is There Water Coming Through My Ceiling?
Water appearing on or through a ceiling is always a sign that something above is leaking, and it needs immediate attention to limit damage.
Immediate steps
- ✓ If water is actively dripping, place a bucket underneath and move anything valuable out of the way
- ✓ If the ceiling is bulging with trapped water, carefully pierce it from below with something narrow to let water drain in a controlled way, rather than risk a larger collapse
- ✓ Identify what's directly above the affected area - usually a bathroom, en-suite, or roof section
- ✓ If it's near any electrics or light fittings, turn off the electricity supply to that area if it's safe to do so
Common sources
The most frequent causes are a leaking bath or shower seal, a failed pipe joint under a bathroom floor, an overflowing cistern, or - less commonly - a roof leak during heavy rain rather than a plumbing fault at all.
Getting it traced properly
Rather than guessing, tracing the exact source before repairing the ceiling saves you fixing the same problem twice. Our leak detection team can identify the source and carry out the repair, whether it's a bathroom seal, pipework, or fitting.
