Wet Room vs Traditional Bathroom: Plumbing Considerations

Wet rooms have become a popular choice for Swindon homeowners, whether for a sleek modern look or for easier accessibility. The plumbing behind one is a bit different to a standard bathroom.

Drainage is the big difference

A wet room needs the whole floor to fall gently towards a drain, rather than relying on a single shower tray. This usually means lowering the floor level or building up a formed, waterproofed sub-floor to create the correct fall - a bigger job than fitting a standard shower tray.

Waterproofing (tanking) matters more

Because water runs freely across the whole floor rather than staying inside a tray, the whole room needs to be properly tanked (waterproofed) before tiling, including walls up to a reasonable height. Cutting corners here is the most common cause of leaks into the room below.

Practical considerations
